Annabeth Rosen is a sculptor best known for abstract ceramic works and drawings. She is considered part of a second generation of Bay Area ceramic artists, after the California Clay Movement, who challenged ceramic traditions of form and function, and prompted clay’s move toward mainstream contemporary sculpture. Rosen’s sculptures range from monumental to tabletop-size, and emerge from a bricolage process that combines dozens or hundreds of fabricated parts, clay fragments, and discards. Her 2 Decal Patterns is grounded in traditional ceramics yet packed with gestural surfaces and expressively applied glazes. It hovers between violence and comedy.

Born in Brooklyn, Annabeth Rosen received her BFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. After graduate school, she taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Bennington College in Vermont, and Rhode Island School of Design. Since 1997, she has taught at the University of California, Davis, holding the Robert Arneson endowed chair. Rosen has received multiple grants and awards, a Pew fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and a number of UC Davis research grants.
